CBCS offer a number of courses that are currently run on a ‘demand led’ basis. On this page we have tried to give you a quick guide to them: which courses are for whom; the qualifications trainees need; the costs etc. Hope it helps.

CBCS Specialist Course in Bereavement and Loss
- Selection Criteria - One day selection process with set criteria. Application plus references plus self-supporting statement.
- Qualification/Experience required - Minimum requirement is COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills or equivalent*.
- Course Duration - The course is delivered over 6 days and the trainer contact time is 36 hours.
- Self Study - 4 hours of e.learning, 12 hours reading time, 6 hours for written assignments, 6 hours for completing the portfolio work. The total commitment is approximately 64 hours.
- Supervised Practice Placement/client work - No practice placement on this course.
- Cost - We will waive the cost of the course for those who intend to volunteer with CBCS. We request that in return you commit to a minimum of two years volunteering after successful completion of the training.
- The cost of the course for those who are undertaking the training for their own CPD or workplace is £495 and must be paid before the course commences.
* Equivalency e.g. other qualifications that are equivalent to COSCA.
CBCS Working with Bereaved Children and Young People
- · Selection Criteria - One day introduction process with set criteria plus reflective assignment. Application plus references.
- · Qualification/Experience required - No specific counselling skills qualification required. Set experience and selection criteria.
- · Course Duration - 12 days (72 tutor contact hours)
- · Self-Study – Short written statement after introduction day, learning journal/portfolio plus 2 written assignments.
- · Supervised Practice Placement/client work - Readiness to practice and supervised* children/young people work from unit 3 onwards.
- · Cost - £1050
* Being in a one-to-one supervision relationship is a requirement.
COSCA Counselling Skills Certificate
- Selection Criteria - One day selection process with set criteria. Application plus references plus self-supporting statement.
- Qualification/Experience required - only an interest in learning and developing counselling skills and self awareness.
- Course Duration - Four modules (each six days, with 36 hours tutor contact time).
- Self Study - Self-directed study, written assignments, self, peer and tutor feedback
- Supervised Practice Placement/client work - No practice placement on this course.
- Cost - £250 per module.
COSCA Counselling Supervision Course
Part 1 - Certificate in Counselling Supervision Skills
Part 2 - Certificate in Counselling Supervision
- COSCA/CBCS Bounded Certificate in Counselling Supervision. CBCS is the validated training provider
- Selection Criteria - Application, references and supporting statement.
- Qualification/Experience required - Participants to have no less than the COSCA Counselling Skills Certificate (or equivalent) as their training. Part 2 requires participants to have a Counselling Diploma and substantial, at least two years, experience as a counselling practitioner, be in a counselling supervisory relationship and minimum of 150 hours supervised client work.
- Course Duration - six days (36 tutor contact hours)
- Self Study - Assessment - The course involves formative and summative assessment. Formative assessments will be in the form of observation and feedback on triad practice/trainee presentations/group work etc and summative assessment will involve written assignments, transcript/analysis, case study (2000-2500 words). Self-evaluation is also a feature of the course.
- Supervised Practice Placement/client work - A minimum of 12 hours of supervisee work is required plus submission of case study. Course participants will also be required to have one hour of supervision for every 6 hours of supervisee work.
- Cost - £850.
CBCS Helpline Training
- Selection Criteria - Telephone interview and meeting with Area Manager
- Qualifiaction/Experience required - No specific counselling qualifications required although COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills an advantage, also previous experience in a similar role beneficial. Excellent telephone manner and ability to deal calmly with distressed callers is a must.
- Course Duration - The duration of the course is 5 days. 2 day ASISIT training required to be undertaken in first year.
- Self Study - E-learning modules prior to course
- Supervised Practice Placement - No practice placement, however shadowing another volunteer and mentoring after completion of course is required.
- Cost there is no cost for this training, however we do ask for a two year commitment volunteering with CBCS. There would be a cost for those doing it for their own CPD.
