Connecting Communities (grief information sessions)

We are working in partnership with Co-op and our sister charity Cruse Bereavement Support to deliver grief information sessions to members of the community across three cities in Scotland. These sessions will upskill individuals in Scotland to feel more comfortable speaking about death and bereavement.

Information

Cruse Scotland, The Co-op and Cruse Bereavement Care are working in partnership to deliver grief information sessions to communities in 12 areas across the UK, three of which are in Scotland (Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow). The Co-op have  generously funded these in person sessions, which allows us to offer them to you at no cost.

These sessions are designed to upskill people in the community to feel more comfortable, confident and compassionate when talking about death and bereavement. The aim is to empower individuals and support others to feel more comfortable too.

The training is for anyone who interacts with the public, providing basic skills to support community members experiencing grief, and they are ideal for people in the following roles:

  • Volunteers in community settings
  • Library staff
  • Retail staff
  • Faith groups
  • Hairdressers, barbers, café staff
  • any individual who regularly engages with the public in a non-therapeutic capacity

The aim of this session is to:

  • Raise your awareness of what grief can be like for individuals, families, workplaces and the community
  • Explore why grief is different for everyone
  • Help you understand what support bereaved people may need
  • Share some skills to help you feel more comfortable about having conversations about death and grief
  • Raise your awareness of organisations that offer practical and emotional support
  • Highlight the need to look after yourself when supporting others

This opportunity has been specially designed as a learning and information session for community members to provide a basic overview. It is not training intended for workplaces or professionals who are supporting clients as part of their everyday work (therapists, counsellors, mental health roles).  For professionals, we provide regular training courses available for both individuals and workplace groups, details can be found here.

Community grief sessions are also available in nine locations across England and Wales, which will be delivered by our sister organisation Cruse Bereavement Support. Click here to register for an event in England or Wales.
